Remarkably, I have just finished reading two new young adult fiction works… What is remarkable is the fact that (for the first time in a long time) I found myself unable to stop reading both books until I had finished them. Hallelujah!
The first was “Incarceron” by Catherine Fisher which is a work of spirited and refreshing imagination. The main character is a young boy who has lived all his life (or so it would appear) in a “living” prison that at one time was imagined to represent an ideal world – a utopia. Incarceron becomes a prison as it becomes self-aware and strives to keep what it has – it’s inmates. Intriguing, fast-paced and beautfilly written, this book will keep you reading (all the way until the end).
The second work was “The Incorrigable Children of Ashton Place” by Maryrose Wood and Jon Klassen. This delightful story tells the tale of how a 15 year old governess turns a trio of siblings from feral children who think they are dogs into three imaginative, adorable and lovable children, using charm and common sense. Another great book, with very clever illustrations, which kept me reading until the last page.
I only hope I haven’t used up my good luck in finding these two works of art so close together and so early in the year!
